We are heading into September, and it’s a great time to remember how to have some late-summer fun. Come engage, enhance, and enrich yourself with the many activities at the Emmitsburg 50+ Center, including a variety of exercises, crafts, games, and trips. As schedules and lives change during this time of year, it’s a great time for fun and expanding social circles. Hope to see you!

The Emmitsburg 50+ Center offers different options for exercise. There are times for moderate- and low-intensity video exercises with an instructor that occur daily. There is also an “unrulies” pickleball group that meets weekly. If structured exercise is not for you, the center also offers an open gym period that allows guests to utilize the gym for creative exercise or sport. If not any of these options, then maybe come join the walking group for a good morning constitutional.

If exercise is not your thing, we also have game and craft times. For game time, come in and join an ongoing group or game, or bring in your own game. The crafts activities for September include the “Fall Door Decor” on Thursday, September 12, and the Macrame “Make and Take” on Thursday, September 19. Additionally, the acrylics on canvas paint-by-numbers will be returning on Tuesdays; however, days may be negotiable. Also, the stained-glass lab will be returning every Monday. Come and let your creativity move you!

Please keep in mind that through September 30, we are offering Lunch Bunch meals for free for all eligible participants. This is an exciting opportunity to visit the center and bring a friend or to meet new people! We have Lunch Bunch every Monday at noon. All you need to do is call ahead at least three business days in advance to reserve your meal.

Please call the center at 301-600-6350 or email emmitsburgseniorcenter@frederickcountymd.gov if you have any questions.

With the weather warming up, people are looking to get outside more and have fun in the summer sun. This means that local carnivals are starting to visit the area with their mix of rides, games, food, and entertainment for the whole family.

Here are some of the local carnivals to look out for this season. Go support them because many of them also serve as local fundraisers for our schools and fire and rescue services.

Scouts in the Park will be held on July 25, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. in Thurmont Community Park. No matter what Scouting uniform you wear, you are invited to come for food, games, skill-building activities, and lots of fun.

Are you interested in finding out more about Scouting? Come talk to leaders from local Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, and Girl Scout Troops.

The Catoctin Banner invites our area’s movers and shakers to help bring a new one-stop, comprehensive reference calendar of events to life. CatoctinEvents.com will be THE place online and in print to reference when seeking an accurate calendar of classes, programs, concerts, special events, hikes, festivals, sports, games, and activities.

In order to implement this in the most comprehensive manner, we are creating a volunteer brigade that will reach out to the many businesses, schools, non-profit groups, sports providers, and coordinators, who provide these opportunities. The volunteers will also work to keep the website up-to-date and visually pleasing.

There’s so much to do in, and around, the Catoctin area! We want everyone to be informed. This initiative will showcase these offerings.

Please call 301-271-1050 or email news@thecatoctinbanner.com for more information.

Rain the night before gave way to sun and heat for the annual Emmitsburg Community Heritage Day on June 24, 2017. Events took place throughout the day, beginning with the Vigilant Hose Company’s breakfast that started at 6:00 a.m. and ending with the last boom of the fireworks around 9:45 p.m.

During the day, dozens of food and craft vendors were set up in Community Park. Visitors could browse the offerings in between participating in events like the horseshoe competition, greased pig chase, and bike rodeo.

Jill Long moved to Emmitsburg three years ago and has attended Heritage Day every year. She really looks forward to it. “It’s really nice to have this available for people. It shows community pride when businesses and people come out and support this.”

Outside of the park, visitors stocked up on books at the library book sale, voted for the best entries in the car show, and toured one of the local museums.

Entertainers performed at Community Park, singing to the visitors. The headline acts were “Mr. Charisma” and Elvis, who presented music in the styles of Dean Martin, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Presley. There was even a dance at the Basilica of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, featuring the music of the Frederick Camerata. Other live entertainment that played at the Community Park bandstand was the Home Comfort Band, the CCC Praise Band, Commendable Effort, and the Harmony Cornet Band.

Ashley Hewitt attends Heritage Day every year with her family. They can find something for each member of the family to enjoy. In fact, there’s so much going on, they have to take a break in the middle of the day to let the kids rest before returning to the park for more.

“I think it was bigger this year than it has been in previous years,” Hewitt said.

Some new activities were offered this year, including a Civil War tea and carriage history tours of Emmitsburg. Community Heritage Day is coordinated each year by the Emmitsburg Lions Club, but would not be possible without generous community support. Platinum sponsors of this year’s event that donated at least $500 to Heritage Day are the Emmitsburg Business and Professional Association, Emmitsburg Glass, Mount St. Mary’s University, William and Bonita Portier, Emmitsburg Ambulance Company, Melissa Wetzel, the Tommy West Foundation, Don and Libby Briggs, Emmitsburg Lions Club, the Town of Emmitsburg, American Legion Post 121, Knights of Columbus Brute Council 1860, Frederick Bicycle Coalition, and More Riding Bicycles and Building Trails.
