The Catoctin-Aires Twirling Corps has captured the title of Advanced Majorette Corps under the sanction of the Capital Area Marching Association.  The championship contest was held in October 2019 at the Hagerstown Junior College Sports Complex.

The group has earned the title consecutively for many years though this year they have won with over a 100-point margin from the second place competitor.  In addition to the advanced group title, the marching group also won first place for its Complimentary Unit and Tiny Tot section, as well as achieving the highest point value for its seniors, juniors, and juvenile twirling units.

Each leader of the group was named the top advanced leader in group competition. Receiving medals for this prestigious award were Lily Marquette as Tiny Tot Leader; Katie Gaffigan, Juvenile Leader; Rachel Bechler, Junior Leader; and Kelly Reed, Senior Leader.

During individual competition, Katie Gaffigan earned the title of Miss C.A.M.A. for her three-part performance in the beginner 10-12 division. India Mitchell won in the Novice 10-12 division. Both girls competed in modeling, twirling, and strutting to be determined the all-around winner of their respective divisions. They received their divisional championship trophy, crown and sash.

Miss Caitlyn Purdum was recognized by the Catoctin-Aires as the year’s Most Valuable Player for having worked in three of the five competing sections of the group.

Four members of the Catoctin-Aires Twirling Corps recently captured the titles of Miss Capital Area Marching Association (Miss C.A.M.A.) at the individual championship event, held in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Hannah Gonzales-Diaz of Emmitsburg was named as the Miss C.A.M.A. Queen in the Novice 7-9 age division. Gonzales-Diaz also won the Advanced Tiny Tot Leader award for leadership within her group in marching corps competition.  She attends Emmitsburg Elementary School.

Erika Oland of Thurmont earned the title of Miss C.A.M.A. Queen in the Novice 13-15 age division. Oland is a national team competitor with the group and a member of the “no-drop” squad of competition group twirlers. She is a student at Catoctin High School.

Rachel Bechler of Frederick earned the title of Miss C.A.M.A. Queen in the Novice 16-18 age group. Bechler is also a national team competitor and is a member of the “no-drop” squad of competition group. She attends Linganore High School.

Paula Jean Sharrer of Myersville earned the title of Miss C.A.M.A. Queen in the 19+ Beginner division. Sharrer is a coach with the Catoctin-Aires, teaching beginner students and the pom pom squad.

The Miss C.A.M.A. event is held to determine the best overall presentation of performance in the areas of twirling, strutting, and modeling combined. This championship contest is held annually at the conclusion of the Capital Area Marching Association’s competitive season. Along with individual competition, the organization also hosts competition for dance-twirl teams, pom teams, color guards, and percussion units, as well as majorette-street style marching.

The Catoctin-Aires, a member of the C.A.M.A. organization since 1977, is currently operating its free four-week introductory program for beginner twirlers. A new class for brand new twirlers is planned for January 2017. It will be held on Monday evenings at the Emmitsburg Community Center Gym. Two classes are being held this year: children ages three-five (6:00-6:30 p.m.); children ages six years and over (6:45-7:30 p.m.). Batons are loaned free for class time. baton-rampage-wins-titleThe Rampage National Baton Twirling Teams have captured the national title of Beginner Senior Large Twirl Team Champions. Rampage is the competitive name for the spin-off group from the Catoctin-Ettes, Inc. and Catoctin-Aires Twirling Corps.

In order to compete for this prestigious title, the group of nine twirlers traveled to South Bend, Indiana, where they twirled at the University of Notre Dame for the week-long event. The National Baton Twirling Association holds its national championship yearly at the University.

All members of the national team were participants in the winning title event and received commemorative Olympic-style medallions. They were: Abigail Adams, Rachel Bechler, Kiara and Shyanne George, Erika Oland, Jilliam Plummer, Caitlyn Purdum, Kelly Reed, and Angela Ridenour. The head coach and director of the group is Donna Landsperger.

In addition to this title, the group also placed in the top ten, earning second place in the Beginner Senior Small Twirl Team category and eighth place in the Beginner Senior Large Dance-Twirl category.
