Thurmont Lions Club Honors Teachers and Students

The Thurmont Lions Club held “Education Night” on April 26, 2023, to recognize the outstanding achievements of teachers and students in the Catoctin Feeder area. 

Scholarships were presented to four exemplary high school students who submitted stellar applications. Recipients of the scholarships were Michael LeGare, who received the four-year Vic Jagow Scholarship; Tanner Seiss, who received the Lynn Stuart Scholarship; Morgan Ridenour; and Joel Miller. The Lion and Jr. Lion Awards were also presented to students who accrued the most hours for dedicated service to the community. Addison Smith of Thurmont Middle School and Bethany Study of Catoctin High School received these awards. A certificate of recognition and a monetary gift was given to these committed students.

Each school in Frederick County Public Schools nominates an outstanding teacher to participate in the FCPS Teacher of the Year event. The nominated teacher from each FCPS Catoctin feeder school was recognized during the program. The nominees are: Even Felmet from Catoctin High School; Shari Stone from Emmitsburg Elementary School; Melissa Sweeney from Lewistown Elementary School; Sadie Wiles from Sabillasville Environmental Charter School; Brooke Claggett from Thurmont Elementary School; Sean McNally from Thurmont Middle School; and Rachel Hamscher from Thurmont Primary School. Highlights from their nomination letters were shared, which described their exceptional achievements; they each received a certificate and gift card.

School donations were also presented to the administrators of the schools in the Catoctin feeder area, including Mother Seton School. Each administrator shared how the donation would be put to good use in their respective schools. A reception was held at the end of the awards program for the honorees and their families.

The evening was a celebration and a tribute to all of these dedicated and inspiring students and educators!

Thurmont Lions Club’s Education Night

Education Night was held at the Thurmont Lions Club meeting on May 12, 2021, and it was a very meaningful evening for the teachers, students, parents, and administrators from the Catoctin feeder area! Lion Bob Kells Jr., chair of the Scholarship Committee, presented scholarships to five very outstanding students: Isaac Dugan (Lynn Stuart Scholarship), Ethan Burdette, Ava Maze, Savannah Morris, and Dylan Click. Pablo Arriaga will receive his fourth year of the Vic Jagow Scholarship.

Three outstanding teachers were nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award. The teachers recognized were: Katherine Best from Thurmont Elementary, Kristianne Dove from Thurmont Primary, and Sarah Gue from Thurmont Middle School.  Kristianne Dove was presented with the well-deserved 2021 Teacher of the Year award. Thank you to all of the teachers who have worked so hard to continue to educate our youth.

Thurmont Lions Club 2019 Community Night

A night to remember as to why we are Thurmont Lions—what a privilege and honor! A well-attended Community Night was held on May 22, 2019—a night to remember for Thurmont Lions Club members, a privilege and an honor. Approximately $12,000 was presented to 19 local community organizations and 8 regional and international Lions funds or organizations. This was in addition to the $12,000 distributed on Education Night for area schools and scholarships. 

These funds were the result of all of the numerous fundraisers the Thurmont Lions Club holds throughout the year: the pit sandwich sales, food sales at Colorfest and Community Show, cash bingo, selling Christmas trees and ornaments, as well as the calendar sales. A lot of work is put into these efforts, but the effort enables the Thurmont Lions Club to give back to its community and to Lions work around the world. This is how they serve, and they should be proud of their accomplishments.

Community-focused organizations receiving donations were: Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Maryland Parents of Blind Children, Guardian Hose Company, Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership, Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, Catoctin Community Medical Fund, Thurmont Food Bank, Camp Jamie/Frederick County Hospice, Community Foundation of Frederick County, Maryland Patriot Guard, Catoctin FFA, Thurmont Regional Library, Hearing Loss of Association of America/Frederick Chapter, Thurmont Middle School Leos, Catoctin High School Leos, Thurmont Scouting, Inc., Thurmont Ambulance Company, Lions District 22-W Hearing and Speech Camperships, Diabetes Awareness Committee, Lions Saving Kids Sight, District 22-W Mobile Screening Van, District 22-W Foundation, Camp Merrick, Lions Quest, Low Vision Research Foundation (LVRF), and Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF).     

Thurmont Lions Honor 2019 Teacher of the Year

The Thurmont Lions Club held its Education Night on May 8, 2019, with Mark Pritts, Frederick County Public School’s instructional director as their guest speaker. The club recognized a teacher from Catoctin High School and the seven feeder schools. Of these eight teachers, a “Teacher of the Year” for the Thurmont Lions Club was honored. Each teacher received a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant. The Teacher of the Year received a check for $250.

The 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year was Marisa Bruce, Thurmont Primary School. Fellow teachers nominated her. An excerpt from her nomination form reads: “She is a music teacher whose love and enthusiasm for music is contagious. Even the most timid student has found confidence and joy in her classroom. She has planned grade-level performances that involve every student this year. This is an amazing opportunity for our students to show and share what they have learned this year. She is a wonderful asset to our school.”

The club recognized Mike Franklin, a physical education teacher at Catoctin High School, who was named Frederick County Public Schools Teacher of the Year. He has been head coach of the CHS baseball team for 20 years. Franklin was unable to join the club for their Education Night celebration due to a previous commitment. However, Principal Bernard Quesada of Catoctin High School said a few heartfelt words about Franklin, regarding his outstanding contributions to the school and his outstanding commitments to the students in the physical education department.

Teacher of the Year Reception

On Monday, March 19, 2018, Thurmont Lions, principals, teachers, family, and friends gathered at the Thurmont Regional Library for the annual Teacher of the Year reception. The Teacher of the Year reception is held to honor all nominees from all eight schools. We had nominations from: Catoctin High School (one nomination)—Teacher of the Year: Angelique Merkson; Thurmont Middle School (three nominations)—Teacher of the Year: Lisa Vaeth; Mother Seton School (one nomination)—Teacher of the Year: Sheila Dorsey; Sabillasville Elementary School (two nominations)—Teacher of the Year: Pam Ellenberg; Lewistown Elementary School (two nominations)—Teacher of the Year: Heather Burgess; Emmitsburg Elementary School (six nominations)— Teacher of the Year: Melissa Kearchner; Thurmont Elementary School (one nomination)—Teacher of the Year: Jennifer Young; Thurmont Primary School (two nominations)—Teacher of the Year: Kristianne Dove.

On Education Night in May, we will honor the eight Teachers of the year and name the Thurmont Lions Club Teacher of the Year. We will also be honoring Bonnie Hopkins, a long-time Emmitsburg teacher, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

A special thank you to Stephanie Steinly, Nancy Echard, and Joyce Anthony, who assisted with the judging and the program; to Paul Cannada and Wendy Candela, who were the official event photographers; and to Dianne McLean, cheerleader extraordinaire.
